My MIL is not known for her culinary skills, in fact cooking in general was not a skill of hers. Don't get me wrong, she fed her family well, and she could boil water and reheat like nobody's business and make some fine meals out of plain pre-packages. So image my surprise the first year I tasted her sugar cookies. I don't remember if she said it was her mother's recipe or her grandmother's or her mother in laws or whoever. Point is, it was a family recipe and it was FANTASTIC. Even more important, they were my husband's favorites and he waited ALL YEAR for them. So like any good MIL and a mother who cares for her son she of course passed the recipe down to me, and the tradition could survive another generation. WAIT! NO, she refused. Every year for six years running, despite my asking numerous times each year, I was denied. It started out as a simple but seemingly generous "Let me make them for you since you work so much." Then it was "Bring the girls over and we'll make them together" (that lasted a couples years) and finally the flat-out "NO! There is no reason for you to have it."
So since this is an era of discovery, new beginnings, and journeys for us Weidielanders; I am in search of that recipe! It's got to be on the internet SOMEWHERE, right? Oy, my hips are NOT going to thank me for this, but hopefully my loving hubby will!
I'll update with pictures and more info later. For no I know it was a lighter tasting recipe. The sugar cookie recipe in my Better Homes and Gardens CookBook is too heavy and Buttery. Daddy Card remembers something about lemon. Lemon extract, lemon zest, lemon peel. Something lemon. It didn't really affect the taste though, VERY VERY subtle hint of lemon that you really had to look for to notice. By the time the kids smeared icing and sprinkles all over the cookies, you couldn't taste the lemon at all. Any points in the right direction would be awesome!
